3M.D. Associate Professor, Haydarpaşa Numune Training and Research Hospital, Eye Clinic, İstanbul/TURKEY Purpose: To report our results of retrobulbar anesthesia in phacoemulsification surgery.
Material and Methods: In this retrospective study, we analyzed 418 patients who underwent phacoemulsification surgery under rerobulbar anesthesia in Sakarya Yenikent State Hospital between June 2007 and September 2009. We evaluated anesthesia complications and surgical outcomes.
Results: During retrobulbar anesthesia, we used sharp injector needle in 188 cases, and Atkinson retrobulber needle in 230 cases. In sharp injector needle used group, 1(0.53%) perforation and 2 (1.06%) retrobulber hematoma occured. Capsulorhexis tear that necessitated conversion to extracapsular cataract extraction occurred in 4 (0.96%) cases. Posterior capsule rupture occured in 6 (1.44%) cases and intraocular lens (IOL) could not be implanted in 1 (0.23%) cases.
Discussion: Retrobulbar anesthesia decreases eye movements and pain, give confortable operating conditions for the surgeon and the patients however carries serious complication risks that may lead to vision loss. Using sharp injector needle increases complication rates during retrobulbar anesthesia. Keywords : Retrobulbar anesthesia, facoemulsification
