3M.D., Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Bioistatistic, Kayseri/TURKEY Purpose: To investigate the demographical characteristics and comorbidity of systemic and ocular diseases of cataract patients in Central Anatolian Region and to evaluate the relationship between the cataract types and comorbid diseases in our cataract surgery patients.
Material and Methods: Six hundreds and thirteen eyes of 613 patients who had cataract surgery were included in this study. The patients were excluded who had history of trauma and uveitis or who had congenital cataract. The patients were included who had history of systemical or ocular comorbid diseases. The patients were evaluated with biomicroscopic examination and seperated into 4 groups of cataract types: Nuclear, cortical, posterior subcapsular, mix. A history of systemic and ocular disease was recorded together with systemic or topical medications used. Blood tests were performed for infectious diseases in the preoperative period.
Results: Mean age of patients were 66.44±11.16 years. Mix type was found the most common type of all cataracts. Except mix type the most common type of cataract was nuclear cataract. At least one comorbid disease was found in 73.2% of all patients. Hypertension, diabetes mellitus and age related macular degeneration(ARMD), diabetic retinopathy-maculopathy were found the common comorbid diseases of all systemic and ocular diseases, respectively. Nuclear cataract was found the most common type of cataract in the patients who had non-exudative ARMD.
Conclusion: Cataract surgeons should examine the comorbid diseases of cataract patients before surgery. In conclusion, there are a lot of comorbid diseases in cataract patients because of they age and oxidative stress they had until these age.
